Dash is one of the sweetest, and in some ways toughest, Bulldogs we have ever seen. He has never tried to bite or resist treatment, no matter how much it pained him. Dash has demodex, it started around a year ago.
He was treated by a number of vets for nearly everything else, and nearly lost his life in the process. We had to get him from MA to NJ, a long ride for a fragile dog. Animal Rescue Flights stepped in and got him to where he could get the care he needed, at no cost to us. Dash is making progress now, but this will be long recovery for him. There are other pictures that I will post next week. This is what his current foster mom wrote...

I have tried to figure out why anyone would name a Dog "Dash" I received an E-mail today and it got me thinking..A Dash is a Line used to separate words on a page -Its dates Born-Died on a Memorial..With that said..The all the sadness and Joy that I see in Rescue thru out the years,- Its Given me Pause-I have Pondered on Dash's name..My heart felt thoughts are this....It doesn't matter when one is Born or when one dies..What matters is the ..DASH..Its the time spent that matters most..It is the Life one lives the Love one gives and gets..its the memories made between the beginning and the end..its truly the "Dash" that matters..We too have our Dash..Its the Memories we make, the lives we touch..Its the chance we are all given to make a Difference in this world, no matter how small..I think I will now pay more mind to my own Dash......I just looked in on our latest Rescue Dash..I now know why he has that name..He has been given a Life and for him it has not been easy..But he is with LIB Rescue now..Many people have seen him suffer..yet he has never complained, never been difficult as I wash his painful scabbed body..he takes his medication, he is so very sick, yet he try's to wag his tush when he sees me..I know how it must hurt.. with all he has and is still enduring..This Is his "Dash"..I know in my Heart that he will get better ..Dash will have his own Loving Family..He will run, play with his Toys and this terrible time will be but a memory..I believe with a full heart that anyone who has met Dash will never be the same..I only wish I Processed his courage and Dignity..I feel Blessed to be trusted with his care..So lets everyone remember to DASH thru life and leave Foot prints and paw Prints behind..Its not when you arrive, nor when you leave.....Its Your DASH .....      Debbey

Please note that the Long Island Bulldog Rescue & BCA Rescue Network rescues only the purebred Bulldogs sometimes referred to as "English" or "British" Bulldogs. The AKC breed name is just “Bulldog”. There are other web sites and phone listings for organizations that rescue other bull-breeds, such as -- American Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Olde English Bulldogges, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Bullmastiffs, and so on.

Welcome to the Long Island Bulldog Rescue website.

Long Island Bulldog Rescue is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization

Our mission is to help English Bulldogs through education, prevention, intervention and adoption.

We fulfill our mission by helping, healing, and homing  abandoned, neglected, abused, or released English Bulldogs.

Why do so many English Bulldogs need rescue?

·         They’re very popular.  English Bulldogs suffer from being very cute, very popular, and very misunderstood.

·         Many come from puppy mills.  Thousands of well-meaning people impulsively buy adorable puppies from the Internet, puppy stores or individual puppy brokers.  Those poor little pups often come from puppy mills from the US and Eastern Europe. Torn from mothers in their first weeks, they often have terrible health problems, genetic disorders, and behavior problems from bad breeding, neglect, and abuse.

·         Many have changes in family  circumstances.  Sometimes a bulldog’s family separates, suffers loss or illness.  Sometimes a member of the family enters the military.

What does Long Island Bulldog Rescue do?

  • Prevention
    • Help people learn to plan all pet adoption – including purchase -- as they would any other member of their family: with care, patience, and love.
  • Education
    • Conduct speaking engagements; Work with schools; Collaborate with other rescue organizations, such as the Mayor’s Alliance of NYC and the Bulldog Dog Club of America Rescue Network.
  • Intervention
    • Take and make calls/other communication with people in crisis; Complete all emergency rescue operations; Provide emergency pick up and evaluation; Give emergency and routine medical care, ranging from spay/neuter to bone setting to life-saving heart surgery;  Work with shelters, law enforcement, other rescue and humane groups.

·         Adoption

    • Maintain a data base of screened people waiting to adopt. Want to be considered?
    • Extensively interview and introduce dogs and people.
    • “Match” people with dogs in need of rescue so each enjoys a “forever” home and relationship
    • Provide follow-up support to ensure successful homing and finalize adoption.

WE ARE IN ALWAYS IN DIRE NEED OF FOSTER HOMES!

PLEASE think about being a temporary foster home! You will need to have an area where the newcomer can be separated from any other dog in the household and you must have Bulldog experience.  Be  a hero Please give a bulldog a chance!

Contact us at BulldogRescue1@aol.com or 631-689-6245.

The following pages will tell you a little more about bulldogs.

Special Characteristics of English Bulldogs

Bulldogs are unique in their own little way.  They are the clowns of dogs.  Always doing silly things to make you laugh.  They are compassionate, loving animals who will steal your heart in no time.  (Please visit www.thebca.org for more information about our wonderful breed.)

Keep in mind that bulldogs are sensitive, even though they look tough! For example, they:

·       Overheat very easily due to the structure of their face.  It is important that they be kept cool in the summer.  If your bulldog is having difficulty breathing and is panting excessively you must cool them down at once.  You can use a cool shower, bath or hose.  Even feeding them ice will help cool their internal temperatures.  Do not plan to jog with your bulldog

·          Snore!  Loudly!

·          Can make a mess when they eat, or when they drink.

·          Have their own ideas about what they would like to do.  Many bulldogs would like to sleep on the couch with you all day. Many others are very active, and want to play.  A lot.  It is important to make the right match for you and the pup.

·        Need their wrinkles cleaned so that they do not get infections.

·        Need your love and attention.  They are a very social breed.

PLEASE Do Not Buy a BULLDOG over the Internet, from Pet Stores or from brokers.

It is best to buy from a reputable breeder.  It is worth the wait!  It is very important that you are able to meet the mother of the litter.

Only you can protect yourself and another innocent puppy from the heartbreak of needing to reach out to rescue because you have a dog who is suffering from horrible behavioral or medical problems because of bad breeding, neglect, or abuse in the first weeks of life.
